Speech: Demonstration in Support of the Lion and Sun Revolution of the Iranian People, August 2026

Distinguished guests, dear Iranian Finns, and friends of freedom,

I have long worked in international affairs and followed the situation in Iran with great interest for quite some time. It is a pleasure and an honor to address you and all friends of freedom here today.

After half a century of nightmare, it is time for Iran to move from darkness into light. I am convinced that we are living through a historical turning point—this is a time of change.

We Finns know what it feels like to live next door to an unpredictable and violent tyrannical regime. The generations of our ancestors experienced it heavily. We continue to witness this same evil every single day, as the ally of Iran's theocracy—Russia—murders innocent Ukrainians just a few hundred kilometers from this very place. This same horror unites all those who suffer from oppression.

Iranians have continuously risen up to oppose the Islamist regime in their country. However, the regime has suppressed every attempt at change through violence.

The protests that began last December were the largest since the 1979 revolution, but the regime crushed them bloody as well, killing tens of thousands of people in the streets. Those in power keep their citizens in fear by constantly committing acts of torture, executions, rapes, and psychological terror. Executions continue to this day. This year, the regime has executed dozens of political prisoners, and several dozens more remain imprisoned facing the death penalty.

The civilized Western world can no longer remain a passive bystander. The slaughter that has been carried out in Iran year after year cannot be accepted. The latest murders of protesters—where the number of victims is counted in the tens of thousands—defies all comprehension. This is practically a genocide, in which a theocratic tyranny destroys its own rising, young generation. It is time to wake Finns and the entire West up to reality. We have seen this blindness before.

In the 1970s, activists who considered themselves progressive demanded change in Iran before the 1979 revolution. Their cries were answered, and the regime fell. But what came in its place? The Islamist theocracy took advantage of these useful idiots and threw them into the trash heap after gaining power. The revolution ate its own children.

Now, unfortunately, we see the same phenomenon in Europe and, regrettably, here in Finland as well. Parties that consider themselves progressive are taking on this exact same role—donning the same familiar mantle of the useful idiot. Where are the so-called human rights organizations and defenders of women's rights when Iranian women are fighting against the mandatory hijab and bodily subjugation? Western sense of perspective has failed: people are afraid of being labeled and close their eyes to reality. Defending human rights is never wrong, and we cannot act differently toward different groups of people simply out of fear of opposing Islamization and the subjugation of women that comes with it.

The women of Iran are symbols of the fight for freedom. When the veil is a legally mandated obligation, resisting it is the purest form of the struggle for freedom. The Western media and certain political circles have for too long fallen for the illusion that one could negotiate with the Iranian system, or that a reformist version of it would emerge. Iranians will not accept a repackaged version of the Islamic Republic. There is no diplomatic ceasefire in relation to the war that the regime is waging against its own citizens.

Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has repeatedly reminded Western countries that the West is making a grave mistake with its policy of appeasement and negotiation—this only supports the Islamist regime in Iran. It is shameful that under diplomatic pressure, Western politicians avoid meeting genuine representatives of Iran, even while supporting Ukraine's fight against Russia's brutal aggression with a high profile. We must ask: are the human rights of Iranians not equally valuable? Ukrainian President Zelenskyy had to set an example for backbone-lacking Western decision-makers here as well when he met the Crown Prince earlier this year. In fact, he has already met Pahlavi twice this year.

The time for negotiations is over. Europe has played itself out by negotiating for years with an Islamist regime that has used negotiations merely as a pawn to buy time for itself and seek new opportunities to act against the Western system.

The Islamist tyranny in Iran is the enemy of Iranians, Finns, and all freedom-loving nations. It supports the war against Ukrainians, acts against us in Western countries, murders its opponents in the West, spies on its political adversaries, and constantly weaves plots with other enemies of freedom to crush Western civilization. Iran's history is a living history. Starting from the philosophy of Zarathustra, in Iranian civilization, the ruler and the law have represented justice and order—unlike the Islamist dictatorship. Iranians have lost their self-determination earlier in their history as well, but have always won it back.

Iran's new generation will make its revolution itself, but it is our duty to support them. This is not distant geopolitics happening far away. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a direct security threat in Finland and the Nordic countries as well. Authorities and intelligence services have confirmed that Tehran uses its diplomatic missions for refugee espionage, harassment of dissidents, and the use of organized crime networks as proxies on European soil.

A regime that fears its own citizens and must resort to terror abroad has reached the end of its road. It is only a matter of time before it collapses. Iranians in Iran, around the world, and here in Finland have started the fight for their freedom—and they will carry this fight through to the end. It is a pleasure and an honor to stand here today on the side of truth and light, supporting the Lion and Sun Revolution as a free Finn and a friend of the Iranian people. It is time to move from darkness into light.

In Ă¢kharin nabardeh, Pahlavi barmigarde!

Long live free Iran! Thank you very much!
